Frequently Asked Questions
We assembled a shortlist of questions you might find useful. Thank you for your interest.
What materials do you need to get involved?
We recommend using luminarias (paper bags with lights inside) with battery operated lights, LED lights, glow sticks, or lanterns, but any light source will do. For example, you could put holiday lights in a paper bag or clear jar and place in your windows. If using live candles, please do not leave them unattended.
How can I decorate luminarias?
Luminarias are great because people of all ages can participate and decorate the luminaria bags with messages of hope. You could write a tribute to someone you admire or draw something you hope for this year. You could scrapbook pictures and affix them to luminarias or download templates to cut out patterns on luminarias. Please take pictures and share on social media. Use #illuminationdc hashtag.
How can I get more involved?
You can organize people in your building or your block to formulate a plan to place lights in all the windows on your street. You can share the information with your neighbors, colleagues, friends, neighborhood associations, and other networks.
